Breaking News

Notice Silver Ravenwolf in the press lately? It’s because she’s got a new book: HedgeWitch: Spells, Crafts & Rituals For Natural Magick (Paperback). Let’s make sure this fluff goes down the tubes with a rating of 1… out of 5.

  • Micky in Australia Writes:

Hey guysI was very interested in your call for more organized action for pagan rights in the public arena as opposed to the internet and thought I’d offer my two cents.

    Though first some introduction,

I am Micky, a follower of the Hermetic tradition as well as a number of other paths, I escaped from a pentecostal church as a teenager but still carry many christian values with me even as I identify myself as a pagan.

As was said in episode 37, the pagan community lacks the numbers to be a serious force in of itself so we rely on other groups to sympathize with us, such as in the case of the headstone incident.

The first step as you said is distributing pamphlets, to different places such as colleges, social centers, shopping centers etc. The trick with these pamphlets is deciding your audience, because then you need two different approaches.

If they’re aimed to rouse pagans in the broom closet to action, then it should have sections on promoting unity between diverse pagan faiths, reasons and methods for coming out of the broom closet, how to contact the larger pagan community and how to take action.

If they’re aimed at non pagans, it should be much more secular, making appeals based on actual experiences people have had being discriminated against, cases where laws and regulations (state law, college regulations) have been broken in the name of favoritism and discrimination, and most important of all, is why it effects the person reading, i.e a breakdown in laws preventing religious discrimination and favoritism is something affecting not only pagans but Atheists, Muslims, Buddhists, etc etc ect, anything non christian essentially.

Its really a matter of picking your targets and tools very carefully, and appealing to as many groups as once, in effect a multipronged assault, ensuring that even if only a small number of people from each group get involved, if you appeal to a lot of different groups, thats a lot of people.

Then its a matter of getting them all to get involved online, yes I know we’re trying for real world change but we have to get them talking in an online setting first, they’ll be more likely to want to take part since they can do so at first from the safety of a computer, and it gives us an oppurtunity to weed out those who want to cause trouble, or just wont actualy get anything done. Then among those who do get involved and are eager to get stuff done, we can get to know them and what they can offer better, for instance it would be helpfull if this multipronged compain landed us a lawyer who wanted to support the cause.

I myself am a graphic designer, mainly focusing on 3D animation and photoshop work, If anything in that realm of things was needed I’d be happy to help.

Another thing to consider is to look at different religious and social groups outside paganism who may have reason to side with us and focus our efforts on appealing our cause to them.

Since I live on the other side of the planet (Australia) I’m not exactly familiar with the particulars of different faiths and organizations in your area. (I have skype if you wanna chat, but I have to yell REALY loud to be heard all the hell way over there XD)

But the first step with whatever organization you chose, is to try to form some kind of public relations campaign with them, if all goes well you could start hosting conferences addressed by pagans and people of the other faith/group aimed at bringing together and educating both pagans and (insert faith here), a local example I’ve seen is the crescent moon and the cross, interfaith meetings between Christians and Muslims.

Though this might need to wait till you have a larger support base and contacts within the relivent faiths who can get you an in with the church for these conferances. But once these get rolling support should realy start growing, just have to keep it relivent to the audiences, hammer home how this effects them or ideals they hold dear, like preserving the rights they are entitled to.

Since you’ve been active in the pagan comminity I expect I’ve said a lot you already know. Just thought I’d chip in and offer my support.I personaly have had great difficulty establishing contact with pagans in Australia since there actualy arent that many of us and as has been said on the show we generaly dont advertise.

I love the show keep up the good work, if there’s anything I can do to contribute to the cause let me know.

    Dark/Light/Nuetral Grey/Whatever-the-fuck-ever Blessings
    Micky

  • Pat writes:

Hi again:It’s been a while since I last wrote. I thought I’d ask about the word metaphysics. As you probably recall, I asked you some time ago whether or not you accept as true the metaphysical reality of Christianity. In episode 79 you claimed that indeed you do. This raised in my mind the question then of what you mean by metaphysics. If it’s true that you hold Christianity to be a metaphysical reality on some level then you must also see yourselves as going to Hell, as you are all pagans and not followers of Jesus Christ, the figure or god which Christianity asserts to be the one and only metaphysical road to salvation from Hell. That is, unless I am mistaken as to what you mean by metaphysics. By metaphysics are you discussing a reality which exists independent of human thought and also above and beyond the physical? Considering Ashlee’s claims about the gods’ merely being parts of the human psyche idolized, as it were, it would seem that you do not necessarily believe the metaphysical realm to exist outside of human thought. Jason also does not seem to accept the view that the metaphysical exists above and beyond the physical as he answered my question regarding where gods come from by recourse to scientific laws - particularly thermodynamics (16:55 in mp3). He could just as easily have said that the gods themselves were responsible for the creation of the said physical laws from outside the universe. So, what do you mean by metaphysical? Pat

Dave notes: Ashlee previously posted a blog entry about semantics where she discussed her definition of Metaphysics: http://imbleedingprofusely.com/archives/308.

Big fucking show question: Ron Hutton wrote marking difference between the two; Gardnerian (Gerald Gardener) would always mark clear separation between Pagan/Wicca & Christianity & the struggle of the later against the former. Alexandrians (Alex Sanders) portrayed themselves as “warriors in a constant battle between good against evil magic.” I have mix views on this myself. These guys where before Cunningham or Buckland. What is P.C.P.’s opinion of the this old school rivalry in wicca?

More fun than a Barrel of Mead!

As they say in the intro, this is a group of average pagans discussing daily and common influences and news about paganism and alternative religion.

Very humorous, with gobs of Dr. Who and other fun sci-fi jokes, 8/10 for audio quality, since sometimes the members attending via Skype are a bit fuzzy sounding.

If you’re pagan and want more information, or just want something fun to listen to, give this a listen :)

  • Magda Writes: (Regarding Episode 79)

    Hey,

I see there’s finally a video game that pisses of atheists. This is so ridiculous; I knew Christians wouldn’t like it because there’s evolution in it, but I never thought atheists would care. Now I’m definitely getting the game.

Also, I love how you guys are going after the organic food topic. I’ve gone to Whole Foods, mostly for meat without hormones, and it’s too expensive. I found a cheaper place called Trader Joe’s, that’s one of the cheaper grocery stores in NYC. It’s has a mix of both organic and non-organic.

I started listening to the Comedy Minute about a year ago, and I’ve been listening, and back listening, to the show for about a month. I’ve read alot, albeit mostly online, about different Pagan faiths since I got in Iraq in April. While I don’t know much about the pratice so much as the dogma of the faith, something inside says to dive deeper. I’m curious about what anyone knows about Paganism in the military, or what everyone feels about a Pagan serving in a Christian dominated military. Thanks for the great show, and thanks for including you listeners.

Pagan Fundamentalism from the Fundamentalist Perspective

  • Where does this originate?
    • Novices seeking role models and finding the wrong role models.
  • Who does this?
    • People who have graduated beyond Wicca 101 but have no means to further their knowledge
    • Fluffy Bashers tend to be knowledgeable beyond the 101 stuff, thus draw in these individuals
    • Tend to be truly religiously diverse groups, contrary to Pagan groups they may have encountered in person or online.
    • During this learning process is the indoctrination that fluffdom is the worst issue facing the Pagan community
  • Why do they do this in the first place?
    • Curb fluffdom (seemingly police forums feeling they must not let any fluffdom go unpunished)
    • Educate others about the faith they claim to practice
    • Feel that non-Pagans will paint all Pagans with a broad brush.
      • Want to stop people from being silly and affecting the thoughts of non-Pagans about them as a person.
  • Methods used
    • Operate in Packs
    • Dogma (these folks will have a very thorough understanding of the dogma, even if those understandings differ within their groups)
    • Logic
      • Logic should not and cannot accurately be used in a spiritual discussion. Inspiration, yes - but not source of knowledge.
    • Science
    • Rhetoric
    • Swarming so it seems like the supposed fluff is in the minority and thus people become susceptible to the group think of these fundamentalists.
    • Aggression by means of excessive calling of BS
    • Intellectual Welfare (bias) for theories they support or believe in themselves (especially as a group)
  • Why so aggressive and insulting?
    • Feel it works. It does work for maybe 4 or 5 people out of every 100.
    • Acceptance, they feel, only promotes Fluffdom
    • Impatient because they’re on a bunch of lists and feel they must read every new/updated thread on all of them every day so must keep responses short.
    • Feel that what is said is far more important than how it is said (lack of empathy)
  • Recruiting Methods
    • They find someone who knows what they’re talking about and is frustrated by only having access to Wicca 101 material
    • Invitation
    • False Association (if they don’t join, say “well, they’re like us”), typically this coerces the individual to join their cause over time. Failure to join will make you a target by the group.
  • What’s the problem with this?
    • Those that do this become spiritually stagnant
    • So busy telling others that they’re too open minded, you become closed minded
    • Closed mindedness is not conducive to new spiritual experiences
  • How to get someone to break the Pagan Fundamentalism habit?
    • Remind them that they have beliefs that cannot be explained without sounding fluffy
    • Separate them from the rest of the pack long enough for them to regain their sanity
    • Introduce them to non-mainstream Pagan publications that go beyond the Pagan 101 crap.
  • How to know you’re not one of these predators without realizing it?
    • Are you needlessly calling BS?
    • Tolerance in moderation, too much or too little can make you a cranky individual.
    • Does it surprise you when someone outside your group of friends says something intelligent? It shouldn’t.

But What’s the Point?

  • Are Pagan Fundamentalists REALLY improving the image of Paganism?
  • Are Pagan Fundamentalists REALLY contributing to the education process?
  • What’s the point of calling BS? Is it really contributing to anything?
    • Sometimes it’s better to let things go, then bicker over things
    • Is someone’s fluffdom really harming anyone?
    • Calling BS can re-enforce the delusions of the alleged fluff
  • Replace the Bullshit Meter with a Give-A-Shit Meter

  • Pat Writes: Hey guys, I have been listening to your podcast for the past few weeks now and it’s a very funny and entertaining show. I have a few questions to suggest as discussion topics.
    1. In episode 78 you discussed catholic mass and taking notes on the symbolism in the churches. Sam said something about being exorcised by Pentecostals (around 32:05 min into the mp3). As an atheist, I was rather curious as to what she meant by this. Does Sam (or the rest of you for that matter) take the metaphysical reality of Christianity seriously? If not, what do you believe about the reality or lack thereof of the Christian world view?
    2. That Corey guy that emailed you about the cosmological argument was interesting (episode 74). I am curious as to what Corey meant by saying that gravity was disrupted since gravity is supposed to be a part of the universe as it exists now, isn’t it? It could not have existed before the universe came into being, much less been disrupted.

I used to think about the uncaused cause alot in the past. When I used to be a Christian I just said that God must exist outside time and space and so he wouldn’t be subject to the linear timelines that we mortals in the universe are subject to. Do those of you who believe in entities like gods/goddesses ever ponder their origins? If so, what insights have you had?

I now you guys mentioned Aleister Crowley, I was wondering if you The book of Laws was before Crowley went crazy. I bought the book over 7 years ago but I never got a chance to read it.

Also the 21 Lessons of Merlyn by Douglas Monroe, in my opinion, isn’t a good intro to Druidism. Monroe likes to add fact with fiction and for a beginner it’s hard to tell. I bought the book after a fellow Druid gave me a list of Druid books and I found out later that I should’ve avoided Monroe’s book. He has some sexist views on women. And some of the rituals are a bit out there. Also its historically inaccurate which is kinda hard to pin because a lot of Druid history is hard to find. I guess its more of a tongue and cheek type of book, but its more of a book to read for entertainment. I think that The Druid Sourcebook is one of the best most comprehensive ones, also The Apple Branch byAlexei Kondratiev is a good history of the Celtic history. I have a lot of Druid books that I can’t name off the top of my head.

So to sum it up, avoid 21 Lessons of Merlyn, sorry Amber.

Its nice to know there are those Christians out there that don’t follow under the stereotypical idea of a Christian. Intelligent conversations are so much nicer than someone running up to you with a flier stating that if you don’t believe in God you’re going to rot in hell.

The other day I had a Jehovah’s Witness come to one of my registers at work and hand me and my cashier a magazine all about being a Jehovah’s Witness - if I wasn’t working it would have been nice to say something - unfortunately I’m under obligation to smile and wish them on their way.

Here is a topic. Relate different religions to countries during the cold war. For example: Fundamentalist christians could be the USSR because they are trying to convert everyone.

For the weekly topics you should add a book of the week.

Has anyone read Spindrift? I have been wondering what other peoples thoughts are on this book. (sorry i forgot the author of the book).

p.s. I have been getting a certan ‘vision/feeling’ every once in a while and I have been trying to figure out what it means but I have never been able to figure out what it is. Any ideas on how to figure it out? (to oversimplfy the ‘vision’ it kinda ‘looks’ like that windows 95 screensaver “pipes”. I cant really describe the feeling.)

p.p.s. Sorry if I sound ‘fluffy’.

p.p.p.s. Sorry about the jumping from topic to topic… I have really bad ADD.

p.p.p.p.s. Sorry about all the Post Scripts.

  • Taith Writes:
    Hello,

I’ve listened to your podcast for a few months now. Regarding the topic of Wicca, initiation, and lineage I hope I can provide some explanation.

I’m a member of coven, where I have completed my dedication and am preparing for my first degree initiation. I could go online to many places and list the name of my teacher and people would give me the dirt as it is known in the community. I could confirm his claims of training, and the claims of his teachers training.

The coven I’m involved in is a Protean Coven, which has Gardnerian roots. Some Gardnerians call the Proteans family some do not. But it is easy to learn about the split.

There is good Yahoo group for anyone wanting to get involved in British Traditional Wicca. You can run the name of a potential teach past the list moderator and find out if that teacher is blowing smoke up your tailpipe about their own training.

    The group is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/amberandjet/

Your comments about Wiccans are often correct, to a point, because there are some Wiccans that have not done any serious work on learning their path, besides buying a book or two and skimming through them.
