Blizzard on Pine Ridge Reservation (South Dakota)

There is a blizzard currently ongoing on the reservation. The reports are that power is out all over the reservation and that while the snow has stopped for the moment, there is a “ground blizzard”
with 60 mile per hour winds. John DuBray – from Allen – reports that the roads are blocked and they are not able to get through to people who need help. People on the rez who have 4 wheel drive can’t move right now but will at the first sign of a break in the weather. They will need gas money to get to the people who are stranded without food, water and heat.

I have contacted the Red Cross – they confirm that at present they are not able to move to provide help. They will start to mobilize at the first opportunity but will need the help of the people on the reservation to reach the elders and families who need help most urgently.
If you can help, please do so.

Love and peace,

I found this project at Beliefnet.com I expanded on what I felt was the pagan groups. But for more in depth discussion check out the website. Its pretty interesting. I think what this all points out is that us Pagans need to go out into the graveyards, copy down some names, and vote as many times as possible. Muwhahah!

The 12 Tribes are….

1. The Religious Right
12.9% voting-age Population

2. Heartland Culture Warriors
11.3% voting-age Population

3. Moderate Evangelicals
9.2% voting-age Population

4. White Bread Protestants
7.3% voting-age Population

5. Convertible Catholics
8.4% voting-age Population

6. The Religious Left
12.7% voting-age Population

7. Spiritual But Not Religious
5.6% voting-age Population
Who they are: Most report spiritual beliefs, like belief in God and some kind of life after death–but they don’t much like houses of worship or organized religion. They report no formal religious affiliation, tend to reject a literal interpretation of the Bible, and mostly report seldom or never attending worship services. 40% are under age 35.

8. Seculars
10.1% voting-age Population

Who they are: Non-religious, atheists, and agnostics. They don’t believe the Bible is literally true, but 44% agree that “all the world’s great religions are equally true and good”. More than four in ten are under 35.

9.Latinos
9.6% voting-age Population

10.Jews
1.5% voting-age Population

11. Muslims & Other Faiths
2.7% voting-age Population
Who they are: Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Wiccans, and other smaller groups.

12. Black Protestants
8.5% voting-age Population

From those who know… well what a surprise – it’s a bunch of fluffy bullshit. It deserves a 1… out of 5 on Amazon. The great thing about Amazon is you can just leave your own review regardless if you bought the book on Amazon or not – kinda like what happened with Spore (rated a 1.5 out of 5) and the ever so hilarious reviews of the $30+/gallon (on Amazon anyway) Tuscan Whole Milk.

Llewellyn… I know you have to whore yourself out to the mainstream to keep yourself in business. But, please, stop publishing pure crap.

Got this on MySpace as a bulletin from Simim:

10 Reasons Why Gay Marriage is Wrong

01) Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning.

02) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.

03) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior.

People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal
standing and can sign a marriage contract.

04) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn’t changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can’t marry whites, and divorce is still illegal.

05) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Britany Spears’ 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed.

06) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn’t be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren’t full yet, and the world needs more children.

07) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.

08) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That’s why we have only one religion in America.

09) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home.

That’s why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise
children.

10) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms.

Just like we haven’t adapted to cars, the
service-sector economy, or longer life spans.

~*~ I Love My Gays =) ~*~

below is a list of etiquette taken from Southern Native American Pow Wows It deals with the Southern style of powwow but is applicable to all powwows.

   1. Bring your own seating when attending pow wows, because public seating is the exception rather than the rule. Lawn chairs are the most common way of solving this.

   2. Do not sit on the benches around the arena. These benches are reserved for the dancers only. You may set up your chairs directly behind the benches, and it is usually good courtesy to ask the permission of the dancer whose bench you are sitting behind, as he/she might have family who are going to sit by him or her.
.
3. Ask permission before taking pictures of dancers. Many people are sensitive about pictures, so it is always good to be on the safe side and ask.

   4. Donate money to the Drum. This is done during a blanket dance, when a blanket will be laid out on the ground and a song or songs will be sung. It is customary to place a dollar bill (or more if you wish) on the blanket and dance the rest of that song, regardless of if you are dressed or not. If you don’t want to dance, you should ask a dancer to place the money on the drum for you. The drum has probably traveled a great distance to give you the beautiful songs you hear, and counts on this to help pay their expenses.

   5. Always stand during special songs. This includes Grand Entry, Flag Songs, Veteran Songs, Memorial Songs, Prayer Songs, or any other song that the M.C. designates. It is also customary to remove any hats that you have on for the duration of that song.

   6. Always listen to the M.C. He will give all of the information you need, as well as entertain you and keep you posted on news. Any questions you have can be answered by him.

   7. Remember you are a guest. Have fun, ask questions and meet people. Everyone there is welcome!

They were all to perform a ritual together, supposedly to contact an extra-terrestrial being.

…

Kenneth Grant claims that as a result of disturbing their working, Houghton’s marriage broke up, and that Houghton died

… the story goes that Madeline agreed to participate in a rite with Gerald, which turned out to involve Madeline being tied up and tickled with a feather duster! The great lady was not amused.

the main differences between the Alexandrian and Gardnerian Books of Shadows occur where Alex mis-heard, or mis-copied something!

Of course we can never really know the truth about the origins of the Wicca. Gardner may have been an utter fraud; he may have actually received a “Traditional” initiation; or, as a number of people have suggested, he may have created the Wicca as a result of a genuine religious experience, drawing upon his extensive literary and magical knowledge to create, or help create, the rites and philosophy.

This is an interesting blog from Hellenismos.us: I Believe I Ordered A Coke.

Imagine if you would that, you are at a restaurant and order a Coca-Cola. After a few moments, the server returns bringing you a root beer. You explain to her the mistake, you ordered a Coke. Instead of the person giving you what you ordered, she then goes into a monologue regarding all the similarities between Coca-Cola and this root beer and, because of those similarities, you should be open-minded enough to accept what she brought you was, in fact, a Coke.

Make sense? No? Hold on, we will keep going.

One to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed.

Fourteen to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently.

Seven to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs.

Seven more to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing light bulbs.

Five to flame the spell checkers.

Three to correct spelling/grammar flames.

Six to argue over whether it’s “lightbulb” or “light bulb” …

Another six to condemn those six as stupid.

Fifteen to claim experience in the lighting industry and give the correct spelling.

Nineteen to post that this group is not about light bulbs and to please take this discussion to a lightbulb (or light bulb) forum.

Eleven to defend the posting to the group saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts are relevant to this group.

Thirty six to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique and what brands are faulty.

Seven to post URLs where one can see examples of different light bulbs.

Four to post that the URLs were posted incorrectly and then post the corrected URL.

Three to post about links they found from the URLs that are relevant to this group which makes light bulbs relevant to this group.

Thirteen to link all posts to date, quote them in their entirety including all headers and signatures, and add “Me too”

Five to post to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy.

Four to say “didn’t we go through this already a short time ago?”

Thirteen to say “do a Google search on light bulbs before posting questions about light bulbs.”

Three to tell a funny story about their cat and a light bulb.

AND

One group lurker to respond to the original post 6 months from now with something unrelated they found at snopes.com and start it all over again!

Since our acts are caused by our choices and our choices caused by our beliefs and desires and our beliefs and desires are not in our direct control, how can it be that our acts are free?

Normally, something like this would become a show topic, but there’s a very long discussion already there and I don’t think there’s much we could add to it.

Well, this time of year it seems that thoughts tend to migrate to Native Americans as a people. I guess Thanksgiving is for Native Americans what Halloween is for Wiccans not so much in spiritual significance, but rather in terms of what the mainstream would consider a cute moment to recognize these groups of people we think we rarely interact with in normal everyday life. We spend maybe part of a day a year to recognize these people exist, what they’re about then quietly resume our “normal” lives.

In any case, I found this nifty blog by one of our listeners describing why Thanksgiving is a day of mourning for some:
